Byte The Book loves bringing people from all areas of the publishing world together so that they can learn from each other and collaborate, and we want to highlight some wonderful collaborations that have come about via Byte The Book. Here's writer A.B. Kyazze telling us about working with mindset coach Kelly Weekes, who met during a free mindset surgery for Byte The Book Members.

How did you meet Kelly?
I took Kelly up on her free offer of a 20 minute taster session for her coaching, for Byte the Book members.

What was it like to work with Kelly?

I found Kelly to be exactly the voice I needed to hear. I was about 12 weeks away from launching my first self-published book (It is my second book; my debut novel was with a small crowdfunded publisher). I was doing everything on my own and for the first time, from the final proofread, approving the cover, interior design, to the websites, liaison with printers, and the social media and marketing. I was feeling overwhelmed and under equipped. Imposter syndrome started creeping in, and I needed a confidence boost.

Can you tell us about the result?

In just a few minutes, Kelly identified where I was at, and helped me focus on the positive. She encouraged me to emphasize the things that got me the most excited – the book, the themes in it and the story behind the stories. She helped me see that if I was genuinely excited, readers and people on social media would respond to that positive energy.

Don’t lead with the worries, the excuses or explanations of what you might have done differently, she counselled. “Lead with the book”, she said. By being so clear and direct, she helped me give myself permission to be proud of my work, proud of what I had already achieved, and open to future possibilities, no matter what comes.

A.B. Kyazze is the author of Into the Mouth of the Lion (2021) and Ahead of the Shadows, which was released on 30 September 2022. Both are stories about a photographer working in intense humanitarian situations in south and central Africa. Ahead of the Shadows is set in the DR Congo, Darfur Sudan and the gritty back streets of Paris. It also about how trauma can be transmitted from one generation to the next, and how one unconventional boy might be able to break the cycle. For more information go to or
