Join us and a panel of experts to learn about publishing, make connections and find out all the intricacies and secrets of the submission process. In partnership with The London Library, this is an opportunity for members of both Byte the Book and The London Library, as well as anyone else who’d like to come along, to meet each other and consider how they might take their writing project to the next stage. On the panel will be Publishing Director of Dialogue Books Hannah Chukwu, literary agent Julia Silk from Greyhound Literary, and publishing polymath Scott Pack. In conversation with Byte the Book Director Justine Solomons, they’ll talk you through how to submit to agents, what publishers are looking for and the hoops they then have to jump through and they’ll reveal the behind-the-scenes processes and machinations of the industry to help you prepare for the next step in your writing life.

Hannah Chukwu is a multi-award-winning Publishing Director at Dialogue Books, where she leads the literary team publishing across fiction, non-fiction, poetry and classics, with a focus on publishing underrepresented voices. Authors she publishes include bell hooks, Bora Chung and Yoko Tawada. Prior to joining Dialogue, she commissioned at Hamish Hamilton, where she also edited Five Dialsmagazine, founded the Black Britain: Writing Back series with Bernardine Evaristo, and was the Policy and Campaign Consultant for the curriculum change project Lit in Colour, in collaboration with the Runnymede Trust. She is a Trustee for the education charity The Brilliant Club.

Scott Pack has spent more than two decades in the book world as editor, publisher and writer. Previously Head of Buying for Waterstones, he has also worked for big and small publishers including seven years running his own imprint of HarperCollins. Authors he has published include Dan Rhodes, Elinor Lipman, Brian Aldiss and Niven Govinden. His latest book is Tips From a Publisher, a guide for new and emerging authors and he teaches the intricacies of submitting to agents and publishers on The London Library Emerging Writers Programme. He is also one of the specialist subject question writers for BBC's Mastermind.

Julia Silk is an agent at Greyhound Literary, where she represents a wide range of fiction and non-fiction authors, including Clare Fisher, Alex Dahl and Maisie Hill. She previously worked as a bookseller and editor for 18 years, latterly as Publisher of digital crime imprint The Murder Room at Orion. She is strongly committed to increasing representation and accessibility for writers across the industry and regularly contributes to organisations which work in that space through workshops, panel events, 1-2-1s and mentoring. She has been a judge on emerging writer prizes including the Bath Novel Award and the Bournemouth Writing Prize.

Justine Solomons is an expert on publishing in the digital age and the founder and Director of Byte the Book, which helps its members to make creative connections and navigate the contemporary publishing world, offering consultancy and advice, professional introductions, networking and other events, product and business development and content acquisition.
